Physical Signs someone may have a drinking problem
You might be noticing things that don’t quite feel right.
If you are wondering whether someone’s drinking has become a problem, you are not alone. It can be difficult to tell what is normal and what is not, especially when the changes happen gradually.
You might have searched for signs of alcohol problems or how to tell if someone drinks too much.
Some physical signs can become noticeable over time, although many effects of alcohol are not always visible.
Skin
The skin is particularly susceptible to chemical changes and imbalances and therefore visible to the naked eye.
- Redness and flushing can be caused by an increase in histamines.
- Appearance or aggravation of skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis or rosacea. There may also be signs of infection or sores.
- Puffy or swollen eyes.
- Pronounced wrinkles, crow's feet, spider veins and dark circles.
- Bruising and bleeding caused by vasodilation.
- Dull, dry skin and lips.
General physical signs
Heavy alcohol use can adversely affect the body’s organs, resulting in visible signs.
- Weight gain caused by drinking sugar-loaded alcohol, which can also inhibit the body's ability to burn fat and carbohydrates.
- Swollen abdomen caused by liver disease.
- Jaundice, which is yellowing of the skin and eyes due to liver dysfunction.
- Tremors or shaking, especially in the hands.
- Slurred speech.
- Unsteadiness, even when sober.
What to do if you notice these signs
If you recognise these signs in someone, approach them gently and do not be judgmental. Explain that you have noticed these changes and are worried about them. If they become angry, defensive, or deny any problem, try to remember this is about them, not you.
Offer your support and encourage them to talk to someone who can help, such as their doctor or a counsellor. Find information on support groups and organisations and let them know there is help available.
If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone.
