I found this to be one of the hardest things to get my head around. Am I supporting if I say no, enabling if I say yes? That is the difference? As a mother you can't just say no to a cry for help. You want to protect and help. You want to save them and make sure they don't refuse to speak to you or you wont know how they are.
I found that there is a fine line. If there was a genuine need for something - food, clothes - shoes - buy them, don't give the money for it.
If they need shelter or help finding a place to stay - help them but don't make your place a doss house if they come to stay and drink there.
Ser rules and boundaries, even just for yourself. Write them down and stick to them. Helping them by helping them isn't always a good thing.
